Medical marijuana might get another hearing in the state legislature after all.
Advocate Bernie Ellis says in an email sent out Friday afternoon that the House Health and Welfare Committee may reopen later this month to hear the Safe Access to Medical Cannabis Act, Senate Bill 251.
Ellis says he was told by the measure’s sponsor, Sen. Beverly Marrero, D-Memphis, that Senate rules require a hearing on any bill referred out of the Senate Government Operations Committee. That panel sent the measure to the Health and Welfare Committee on Wednesday with a negative recommendation.
“The opportunity to receive another high-profile hearing as a platform through which to promote the Safe Access program again this year is very much appreciated,” Ellis said.
Ellis hopes to get 30 minutes on the bill from Health Committee chairman Rusty Crowe, R-Johnson City.
