Am a resident of Garfield County, Colorado and the City of Glenwood Springs. Also am a prominent local business owner. My wife and I have known both Tom and Tresi for a lot of years.

Until about a year ago, we were also life long card carrying Republicans. No longer. Changed to unaffiliated Independents. Did not change our conservative values and views. Never will.

And we, are voting for Tresi Houpt even though we were originally really pleased to see Tom throw his hat in. Our change of support is because of the way Tom handled a major crisis in our tourism industry over the past year. A decades old problem, involving millions of dollars of public revenues that he was concerned enough about in 2006 to create what is soon to be known as the 'old' Tourism Board. From there to the past 20 months of that old problem rearing it's head again while at the same time our tourism revenues plummet for two years in a row to the tune of close to 36% down; Tom has stood by and let others do the dirty work of getting the soon to be seated on 9/2/10 historic and very powerful in the hands of the folks 'new' Tourism Board in place.

The way smalltown7 looks at this commish race is that we might not like Tresi's wanting controls on our drilling, but Tresi Houpt always looks out for the best interests of the people of Garco and she has shown backbone time after time again. Would rather keep backbone in this seat than lose it and we would rather just hold out the hope that maybe we can re-train her to a drill, baby, drill way of thinking. Good luck riding that rim your on, Tom. All the way to November.

As quoted above: " My first reaction was “Wow! This guy is running for Congress?” If you are interested in the CD-5 race I would suggest reading it, but I’ll summarize for those who don’t."

Which one of Dave's boys did the summarizin? sems like he missed the little matter about Dr Salvino being vindicated by the judge.

So sad. Just like 2008, smears, smears and more smears. Dave can't win so he smears someone who can.

Amazing...

Never once have I ever saw a headline -- newspaper or blog -- that proclaimed: GOOD TIME FOR A FUNDRAISER.

Nope -- the timing is always bad. Shine the light on those politicians who must be up to no good. Don't dare search for a deeper answer. Scratch the surface instead.

Also keep in mind that termed out legislators amassed quite a campaign debt while running for a new office in an election they ultimately lost. They might be termed out -- but they are holding fundraisers because there are still campaign debts to pay.

One other thing? Try picking up the phone and asking the simple question of "Why." You'll be amazed how far you get.

I believe Proposition 19 will pass with an overwhelming majority. As a filmmaker, I've been documenting Northern California marijuana growers since 2005. These people are fighting the good fight and paving the way for future patients and growers.

You can see what it's like from the pot fields, watch our documentary on HULU for free and help spread the word about legalization.

I think this is a joke. This man wants to be mayor of Rogers but doesn't even live in the Rogers community? Why would we want someone who doesn't even live in our fine city, who has a stake in our city, represent it as mayor? So what if you are moving to Rogers. And I don't understand the statement "no other candidates are qualified". There is only one other candidate and he is more than qualified as well as a long term resident of Rogers, already working for the city as alderman.

I really dislike people with DEEP POCKETS such as Nurse Black who buy their seats - you have to wonder why people want the job THAT BAD that they have $90MM in their warchest. Suspicious. I'm smelling Black as another RINO.

Approval Voting means voting for as many candidates as you want to, not ranking. It is better than most ranking methods because if you prefer Third>Major[Party1]>Major[Party2], you never have a reason not to support Third (e.g. Nader). Ranked methods, like IRV, typically give voters a strategic incentive to put Major1 in third place, so "vote for Gore even if you really prefer Nader".

after a year long battle with the natural gas industry and city politicians we have decided this is a national issue and there needs to be a united american voice against drilling - to allow these city officials across the united states to make up their own rules is allowing the gas industry to win this battle - we need this to become a national issue and to be put into the hands of congress and the senate -

The National Popular Vote bill would guarantee the Presidency to the candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states (and DC).

Every vote, everywhere, would be politically relevant and equal in presidential elections. It would no longer matter who won a state. Candidates would need to care about voters in Arkansas and across the nation, not just undecided voters in a handful of swing states.

The current winner-take-all rule (i.e., awarding all of a state’s electoral votes to the candidate who receives the most popular votes in each state) used by 48 of the 50 states ensures that the candidates do not reach out to all of the states and their voters. Candidates have no reason to poll, visit, advertise, organize, campaign, or care about the voter concerns in the dozens of states where they are safely ahead or hopelessly behind.

The bill would take effect only when enacted, in identical form, by states possessing a majority of the electoral votes--that is, enough electoral votes to elect a President (270 of 538). When the bill comes into effect, all the electoral votes from those states would be awarded to the presidential candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states (and DC).

The bill uses the power given to each state by the Founding Fathers in the Constitution to change how they award their electoral votes for president. Historically, virtually all of the major changes in the method of electing the President (for example, ending the requirement that only men who owned substantial property could vote), including current state-by-state winner-take-all laws, have come about by state legislative action, without federal constitutional amendments.

The bill has been endorsed or voted for by 1,922 state legislators (in 50 states) who have sponsored and/or cast recorded votes in favor of the bill.

In Gallup polls since 1944, only about 20% of the public has supported the current system of awarding all of a state's electoral votes to the presidential candidate who receives the most votes in each separate state (with about 70% opposed and about 10% undecided). The recent Washington Post, Kaiser Family Foundation, and Harvard University poll shows 72% support for direct nationwide election of the President. Support for a national popular vote is strong in virtually every state, partisan, and demographic group surveyed in recent polls in closely divided battleground states: Colorado-- 68%, Iowa --75%, Michigan-- 73%, Missouri-- 70%, New Hampshire-- 69%, Nevada-- 72%, New Mexico-- 76%, North Carolina-- 74%, Ohio-- 70%, Pennsylvania -- 78%, Virginia -- 74%, and Wisconsin -- 71%; in smaller states (3 to 5 electoral votes): Alaska -- 70%, DC -- 76%, Delaware --75%, Maine -- 77%, Nebraska -- 74%, New Hampshire --69%, Nevada -- 72%, New Mexico -- 76%, Rhode Island -- 74%, and Vermont -- 75%; in Southern and border states: Arkansas --80%, Kentucky -- 80%, Mississippi --77%, Missouri -- 70%, North Carolina -- 74%, and Virginia -- 74%; and in other states polled: California -- 70%, Connecticut -- 74% , Massachusetts -- 73%, Minnesota -- 75%, New York -- 79%, Washington -- 77%, and West Virginia- 81%.

The National Popular Vote bill has passed 30 state legislative chambers, in 20 small, medium-small, medium, and large states, including one house in Arkansas (6), Connecticut (7), Delaware (3), Maine (4), Michigan (17), Nevada (5), New Mexico (5), New York (31), North Carolina (15), and Oregon (7), and both houses in California (55), Colorado (9), Hawaii (4), Illinois (21), New Jersey (15), Maryland (10), Massachusetts (12), Rhode Island (4), Vermont (3), and Washington (11). The bill has been enacted by Hawaii, Illinois, New Jersey, Maryland, and Washington. These five states possess 61 electoral votes -- 23% of the 270 necessary to bring the law into effect.

Why is this article quoting a "Democratic Consultant" like it's somebody neutral?! Mike Stratton is a very public Bennet supporter. He also happens to be the same guy who was advising Bill Richardson who got into trouble over shady financial dealings brokered by Chris Romer that Stratton made a quarter million on. Romer worked for JPMorgan who gave money to Bennet and who made millions off Bennet's own shady financial dealings with DPS pension money

This is the sucessful executive, with managerial skills and business acumen? He's got to be kidding. If he turns this state around the way he's done his own business, we'll be as well off as Haiti afer four years of a Maes administration. McInnis may have faked some articles, it looks like Maes faked a whole career.

I believe this whole mess began with a state elected official who was totally misusing a state provided vehicle on his farm. That person opened a can of worms that none of the officials were prepared for. The Auditors office is really the one at fault. Personal use (if any) is deemed at the beginning of use and taxed through the payroll (that is Mr. Wood's repsonsiblity) either on their W-2 or 1099. Most taxpayers, including Ms Shoffner, comply with the law, the very complex tax law. So let's get the story straight, and put the blame where it belongs. Sometimes what you read in print is not always the way it was intended or even said. Some reporters are more interested in winning the article of the year award over printing the words actually said. The word confused sounds alot like refused and being the ambious reporter for headlines why not substitute one for the other?
Mr. Wood's quit hanging behind the skirts of Ms Shoffner and do your job.

All I can say is, screw you lady! My husband and I were both laid off due to our company's decision to cut costs and outsource our jobs to another country. Since then, we have cut back to almost no spending, make our meals at home, have cut back on all "bells and whistles" and still can't afford to pay our mortgage. We are both out "pounding the pavement" every day, with little or no response. And still - I am PAYING THOUSANDS IN STATE AND FEDERAL TAXES per year! We aren't sitting around on our behinds watching reruns of "Lost"!

Anybody who takes a hard line like this on UI benefits in this hard economy clearly has NO understanding of what it is like to have no income. This arrogance annoys me to no end. Clearly she or nobody she knows is out of work or requires unemployment assistance. This lack of empathy and compassion for out-of-work Americans is inexcusable! Shame on you, Sharron Angle!
